Antiphona
A porta ínferi érue Dómine ánimam meam.
From the gate of hell, deliver my soul, O Lord.
(Is. 38: 10-20) Ego dixi: In dimídio diérum meórum
(Is. 38: 10-20) “I said: In the middle of my days,
vadam ad portas ínferi.
I will go to the gates of Hell.
2. Quæsívi resíduum annórum meórum.
2. So I sought the remainder of my years.
Dixi: Non vidébo Dóminum Deum in terra vivéntium.
I said: I will not see the Lord God in the land of the living.
3. Non aspíciam hóminem ultra,
3. I will no longer behold man,
et habitatórem quiétis.
nor the habitation of rest.
4. Generátio mea abláta est, et convolúta est a me,
4. My longevity has been taken away;
quasi tabernáculum pastórum.
it has been folded up and taken from me, like the tent of a shepherd.
5. Præcísa est velut a texénte, vita mea:
5. My life has been cut off, as if by a weaver.
dum adhuc ordírer, succídit me:
† While I was still beginning, he cut me off.
de mane usque ad vésperam fínies me.
From morning until evening, you have marked out my limits.
6. Sperábam usque ad mane,
6. I hoped, even until morning.
quasi leo sic contrívit ómnia ossa mea:
Like a lion, so has he crushed all my bones.
7. De mane usque ad vésperam fínies me:
7. From morning until evening, you have marked my limits.
sicut pullus hirúndinis sic clamábo,
† I will cry out, like a young swallow.
meditábor ut colúmba:
I will meditate, like a dove.
8. Attenuáti sunt óculi mei,
8. My eyes have been weakened
suspiciéntes in excélsum.
by gazing upward.
9. Dómine, vim pátior, respónde pro me.
9. O Lord, I suffer violence! Answer in my favor.
Quid dicam, aut quid respondébit mihi, cum ipse fécerit?
What can I say, or what would he answer me, since he himself has done this?
10. Recogitábo tibi omnes annos meos
10. I will acknowledge to you all my years,
in amaritúdine ánimæ meæ.
in the bitterness of my soul.
11. Dómine, si sic vívitur, et in tálibus vita spíritus mei,
11. O Lord, if such is life, and if the life of my spirit is of such a kind,
corrípies me, et vivificábis me.
† may you correct me and may you cause me to live.
Ecce, in pace amaritúdo mea amaríssima:
Behold, in peace my bitterness is most bitter.
12. Tu autem eruísti ánimam meam ut non períret:
12. But you have rescued my soul, so that it would not perish.
projecísti post tergum tuum ómnia peccáta mea.
You have cast all my sins behind your back.
13. Quia non inférnus confitébitur tibi,
13. For Hell will not confess to you,
neque mors laudábit te:
† and death will not praise you.
non exspectábunt qui descéndunt in lacum, veritátem tuam.
Those who descend into the pit will not hope for your truth.
14. Vivens vivens ipse confitébitur tibi, sicut et ego hódie:
14. The living, the living, these will give praise to you, as I also do this day!
pater fíliis notam fáciet veritátem tuam.
The father will make the truth known to the sons.
15. Dómine, salvum me fac
15. O Lord, save me!
et psalmos nostros cantábimus cunctis diébus vitæ nostræ in domo Dómini.
And we will sing our psalms, all the days of our life, in the house of the Lord.”
16. Réquiem ætérnam
16. Eternal rest
dona eis Dómine.
grant unto them, O Lord,
17. Et lux perpétua
17. and may perpetual light
lúceat eis.
shine upon them.
A porta ínferi érue Dómine ánimam meam.
From the gate of hell, deliver my soul, O Lord.
