Hymnus
1. Ætérne rerum Cónditor,
1. Eternal architect of the universe,
Noctem diémque qui regis,
You who rule night and day,
Et témporum das témpora,
And alternate times with times
Ut álleves fastídium.
To take away the boredom.
2. Præco diéi jam sonat,
2. Already sings the herald of the day,
Noctis profúndæ pérvigil,
Sentinel of the deep night,
Noctúrna lux viántibus
Night light for travelers,
A nocte noctem ségregans.
Dividing one part of the night from the other.
3. Hoc excitátus Lúcifer
3. At the song of him, waking up, lucifer
Solvit polum calígine:
Free the sky from darkness,
Hoc omnis errónum cohors
And the coven of evil spirits
Viam nocéndi déserit.
They leave the ways of sin.
4. Hoc nauta vires cólligit,
4. At the song of him the helmsman regains his strength
Pontíque mitéscunt freta:
And the waves of the sea subside;
Hoc, ipsa petra Ecclésiæ,
Also the 'stone' of the Church
Canénte, culpam díluit.
Wash away his guilt with tears.
5. Surgámus ergo strénue:
5. Let us stand up, therefore, fearless;
Gallus jacéntes éxcitat,
The rooster shakes the lying,
Et somnoléntos íncrepat,
Reprimands the sleepy,
Gallus negántes árguit.
Accuse the renegades.
6. Gallo canénte, spes redit,
6. At his song hope is revived,
Ægris salus refúnditur,
Health returns to the sick,
Mucro latrónis cónditur,
The killer's weapon hides,
Lapsis fides revértitur.
Faith is renewed in the fallen.
7. Jesu, labéntes réspice,
7. Jesus, look at the vacillating ones
Et nos vidéndo córrige:
Support us with your gaze;
Si réspicis, lapsi stabunt,
If you observe us, sins fall,
Fletúque culpa sólvitur.
And with weeping the guilt dissolves.
8. Tu, lux, refúlge sénsibus,
8. You, light, shine to the senses,
Mentísque somnum díscute:
And dispels the sleep of the mind,
Te nostra vox primum sonet,
Our voice resounds from you,
Et vota solvámus tibi.
For you we melt the lip.
9. Deo Patri sit glória,
9. To God the Father, be glory,
Ejúsque soli Fílio,
And to His only Son of him,
Cum Spíritu Paráclito,
With the Spirit, the Comforter,
Et nunc, et in perpétuum.
Now and forever.
Amen.
Amen.
