Hymnus
1. Verbum supérnum pródiens
1. The Word, descending from above,
Nec Patris linquens déxteram,
Though with the Father still on high,
Ad opus suum éxiens,
Went forth upon his work of love,
Venit ad vitæ vésperam.
And soon to life’s last eve drew nigh.
2. In mortem a discípulo
2. He shortly to a death accursed
Suis tradéndus ǽmulis,
By a disciple shall be given;
Prius in vitæ férculo
But, to his twelve disciples, first
Se trádidit discípulis.
He gives Himself, the Bread from Heaven.
3. Quibus sub bina spécie
3. Himself in either kind He gave;
Carnem dedit et sánguinem,
He gave his Flesh, He gave his Blood;
Ut dúplicis substántiæ
Of flesh and blood all men are made;
Totum cibáret hóminem.
And He of man would be the Food.
4. Se nascens dedit sócium,
4. At birth our brother He became;
Convéscens in edúlium,
At meat Himself as food He gives;
Se móriens in prétium,
To ransom us He died in shame;
Se regnans dat in prǽmium.
As our reward, in bliss He lives.
5. O salutáris hóstia,
5. O saving Victim! opening wide
Quæ cæli pandis óstium,
The gate of Heaven to man below!
Bella premunt hostília:
Sore press our foes from every side;
Da robur, fer auxílium.
Thine aid supply, thy strength bestow.
6. Uni trinóque Dómino
6. To thy great Name be endless praise,
Sit sempitérna glória,
Immortal Godhead, One in Three!
Qui vitam sine término
Oh, grant us endless length of days,
Nobis donet in pátria.
In our true native land, with Thee.
Amen.
Amen.
