Benedícite Dóminum, omnes elécti ejus :
Bless the Lord, all his chosen ones,
ágite dies lætítiæ, et confitémini illi.
keep holiday, and extol Him.
(Sap. 3: 1-6) Justórum autem ánimæ in manu Dei sunt,
(Wis. 3: 1-6) But the souls of the righteous are in the hand of God,
et non tanget illos torméntum mortis.
and no torment will ever touch them.
2. Visi sunt óculis insipiéntium mori:
2. In the eyes of the foolish they seemed to have died,
et æstimáta est afflíctio éxitus illórum:
and their departure was thought to be a disaster,
3. Et quod a nobis est iter extermínium;
3. and their going from us to be their destruction;
illi autem sunt in pace.
but they are at peace.
4. Etsi coram homínibus torménta passi sunt,
4. For though in the sight of others they were punished,
spes illórum immortalitáte plena est.
their hope is full of immortality.
5. In paucis vexáti, in multis bene disponéntur,
5. Having been disciplined a little, they will receive great good,
quóniam Deus tentávit eos, et invénit illos dignos se.
because God tested them and found them worthy of himself;
6. Tamquam aurum in fornáce probávit illos,
6. Like gold in the furnace he tried them,
et quasi holocáusti hóstiam accépit illos,
and like a sacrificial burnt offering he accepted them.
et in témpore erit respéctus illórum.
In the time of their freed.
7. Glória Patri, et Fílio,
7. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son,
et Spirítui Sancto.
and to the Holy Spirit,
8. Sicut erat in princípio, et nunc, et semper,
8. As it was in the beginning, is now,
et in sǽcula sæculórum. Amen.
and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
9. (Sap 3: 7-9) Fulgébunt justi,
9. (Wis. 3: 7-9) In the time of their visitation they will shine forth,
et tamquam scintíllæ in arundinéto discúrrent.
and will run like sparks through the stubble.
10. Judicábunt natiónes, et dominabúntur pópulis,
10. They will govern nations and rule over peoples,
et regnábit Dóminus illórum in perpétuum.
and the Lord will reign over them forever.
11. Qui confídunt in illo intélligent veritátem,
11. For those who trust in him understand the truth
et fidéles in dilectióne acquiéscent illi:
and the faithful will abide with him in love,
12. Quóniam donum
12. because grace and mercy
et pax est eléctis ejus.
are upon his elect.
13. Glória Patri, et Fílio,
13. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son,
et Spirítui Sancto.
and to the Holy Spirit,
14. Sicut erat in princípio, et nunc, et semper,
14. As it was in the beginning, is now,
et in sǽcula sæculórum. Amen.
and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
15. (Sap. 10: 17-21) Réddidit justis mercédem labórum suórum,
15. (Wis. 10: 17:21) She gave holy men the reward of their labors;
et dedúxit illos in via mirábili:
she guided them along a marvelous way,
16. Et fuit illis in velaménto diéi,
16. and became a shelter to them by day,
et in luce stellárum per noctem:
and a starry flame through the night.
17. Tránstulit illos per Mare Rubrum,
17. She brought them over the Red Sea,
et transvéxit illos per aquam nímiam.
and led them through deep waters;
18. Inimícos autem illórum demérsit in mare,
18. but she drowned their enemies,
et ab altitúdine inferórum edúxit illos.
and cast them up from the depth of the sea.
19. Ideo justi tulérunt spólia impiórum,
19. Therefore the righteous plundered the ungodly;
et decantavérunt, Dómine, nomen sanctum tuum,
they sang hymns, O Lord, to thy holy name,
20. Et victrícem manum tuam laudavérunt páriter:
20. and praised with one accord thy defending hand,
quóniam sapiéntia apéruit os mutórum,
because wisdom opened the mouth of the dumb,
et linguas infántium fecit disértas.
and made the tongues of babes speak clearly.
21. Glória Patri, et Fílio,
21. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son,
et Spirítui Sancto.
and to the Holy Spirit,
22. Sicut erat in princípio, et nunc, et semper,
22. As it was in the beginning, is now,
et in sǽcula sæculórum. Amen.
and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
Benedícite Dóminum, omnes elécti ejus :
Bless the Lord, all his chosen ones,
