Antiphona
Caro mea vere est cibus,
My Flesh is food indeed,
et sanguis meus vere est potus;
and My Blood is drink indeed.
qui mandúcat carnem meam,
"He who eats My flesh
et bibit sánguinem meum,
and drinks My blood,
habet vitam ætérnam, dicit Dóminus.
has eternal life, says the Lord.
(Prov. 9: 1-12) Sapiéntia ædificávit sibi domum,
(Prov. 9: 1-12) Wisdom hath built her house;
excídit colúmnas septem.
she hath hewn out her seven pillars.
2. Immolávit víctimas suas,
2. She hath killed her beasts,
míscuit vinum, et propósuit mensam suam.
she hath mingled her wine, she hath also furnished her table.
3. Misit ancíllas suas, ut vocárent ad arcem,
3. She hath sent forth her maidens,
et ad mœ́nia civitátis:
she crieth from the highest places of the city:
4. Si quis est párvulus, véniat ad me.
4. “Whoso is simple, let him turn in hither!”
Et insipiéntibus locúta est:
As for him that wanteth understanding, she saith to him:
5. Veníte, comédite panem meum,
5. “Come, eat of my bread
et bíbite vinum quod míscui vobis.
and drink of the wine which I have mixed.
6. Relínquite infántiam, et vívite,
6. Forsake the foolish and live,
et ambuláte per vias prudéntiæ.
and go in the way of understanding.”
7. Princípium sapiéntiæ timor Dómini:
7. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom,
et sciéntia sanctórum, prudéntia.
and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.
8. Per me enim multiplicabúntur dies tui,
8. For by me thy days shall be multiplied,
et addéntur tibi anni vitæ.
and the years of thy life shall be increased.
9. Si sápiens fúeris, tibimetípsi eris:
9. If thou be wise, thou shalt be wise for thyself;
si autem illúsor, solus portábis malum.
but if thou be a scorner, thou alone shall bear it.
10. Glória Patri, et Fílio,
10. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son,
et Spirítui Sancto.
and to the Holy Ghost.
11. Sicut erat in princípio, et nunc, et semper,
11. As it was in the beginning, is now,
et in sǽcula sæculórum. Amen.
and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
12. (Ier. 31: 10-14) Audíte verbum Dómini, Gentes,
12. (Jer. 31: 10-14) “Hear the word of the Lord, you nations;
et annuntiáte in ínsulis, quæ procul sunt, et dícite:
proclaim it in distant coastlands:
13. Qui dispérsit Israël, congregábit eum:
13. "He who scattered Israel will gather them
et custódiet eum sicut pastor gregem suum.
and will watch over his flock like a shepherd."
14. Redémit enim Dóminus Jacob,
14. For the Lord will deliver Jacob
et liberávit eum de manu potentióris.
and redeem them from the hand of those stronger than they.
15. Et vénient, et laudábunt in monte Sion:
15. They will come and shout for joy on the heights of Zion;
et cónfluent ad bona Dómini.
they will rejoice in the bounty of the Lord
16. Super fruménto, et vino, et óleo,
16. the grain, the new wine and the olive oil,
et fœtu pécorum et armentórum:
the young of the flocks and herds.
17. Erítque ánima eórum quasi hortus irríguus,
17. They will be like a well-watered garden,
et ultra non esúrient.
and they will sorrow no more.
18. Tunc lætábitur virgo in choro,
18. Then young women will dance and be glad,
júvenes et senes simul:
young men and old as well.
19. Et convértam luctum eórum in gáudium,
19. I will turn their mourning into gladness;
et consolábor eos, et lætificábo a dolóre suo.
I will give them comfort and joy instead of sorrow.
20. Et inebriábo ánimam sacerdótum pinguédine:
20. I will satisfy the priests with abundance,
et pópulus meus bonis meis adimplébitur, ait Dóminus.
and my people will be filled with my bounty,” declares the Lord.

21. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son,
et Spirítui Sancto.
and to the Holy Ghost.

22. As it was in the beginning, is now,

23. (Sap. 16: 20-21, 26, 29. 17: 1) Angelórum esca nutrivísti pópulum tuum,
23. (Sap. 16: 20-21, 26, 29. 17: 1) Instead of this, you nourished your people with food of angels
et parátum panem de cælo præstitísti illis sine labóre,
and furnished them bread from heaven, ready to hand,
24. Omne delectaméntum in se habéntem,
24. Untoiled-for, endowed with all delights
et omnis sapóris suavitátem.
and conforming to every taste.
25. Substántia enim tua dulcédinem tuam,
25. For this substance of yours revealed
quam in fílios habes, ostendébat:
your sweetness toward your children,
26. Et desérviens uniuscujúsque voluntáti,
26. and serving the desire of him who received it,
ad quod quisque volébat, convertebátur.
was blended to whatever flavor each one wished.
27. Ut scirent fílii tui quos dilexísti, Dómine,
27. That your sons whom you loved might learn, O LORD,
quóniam non nativitátis fructus pascunt hómines,
that it is not the various kinds of fruits that nourish man,
sed sermo tuus hos, qui in te credíderint, consérvat.
but it is your word that preserves those who believe you!
28. Ingráti enim spes tamquam hibernális glácies tabéscet,
28. For the hope of the ingrate melts like a wintry frost
et dispériet tamquam aqua supervácua.
and runs off like useless water.
29. Magna sunt enim judícia tua, Dómine,
29. For great are your judgments,
et inenarrabília verba tua:
and hardly to be described;
propter hoc indisciplinátæ ánimæ erravérunt.
therefore, the unruly souls were wrong.

30. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son,
et Spirítui Sancto.
and to the Holy Ghost.
