Lectio
C. Simíliter autem et omnes dicébant.
C. And all of them said the same.
Et véniunt in prǽdium, cui nomen Gethsémani;
They went to a place called Gethsemane;
et ait discípulis suis:
and Jesus said to his disciples,
† Sedéte hic,
† Sit here
donec orem.
while I pray.
C. Et assúmit Petrum et Jacóbum et Joánnem secum
C. He took with him Peter and James and John,
et cœpit pavére et tædere;
and began to be distressed and agitated.
et ait illis:
And said to them,
† Tristis est ánima mea
† I am deeply grieved,
usque ad mortem;
even to death;
sustinéte hic et vigiláte.
remain here, and keep awake.
C. Et cum processísset páululum,
C. And going a little farther,
procidébat super terram
he threw himself on the ground
et orábat, ut, si fíeri posset,
and prayed that,
transíret ab eo hora; et dicébat:
if it were possible, the hour might pass from him. He said,
† Abba, Pater!
† Abba, Father,
Omnia tibi possibília sunt.
for you all things are possible;
Transfer cálicem hunc a me;
remove this cup from me;
sed non quod ego volo,
yet, not what I want,
sed quod tu.
but what you want.
C. Et venit et ínvenit eos dormiéntes;
C. Jesus came and found them sleeping;
et ait Petro:
and he said to Peter,
† Simon, dormis?
† Simon, are you asleep?
Non potuísti una hora vigiláre?
Could you not keep awake one hour?
Vigiláte et oráte,
Keep awake and pray
ut non intrétis in tentatiónem;
that you may not come into the time of trial;
spíritus quidem promptus,
the spirit indeed is willing,
caro vero infírma.
but the flesh is weak.
C. Et íterum ábiens
C. And again he went away
orávit, eúndem sermónem dicens.
and prayed, saying the same words.
Et véniens dénuo
And once more he came
ínvenit eos dormiéntes;
and found them sleeping,
erant enim óculi illórum ingraváti,
for their eyes were very heavy;
et ignorábant quid respondérent ei.
and they did not know what to say to him.
Et venit tértio
He came a third time
et ait illis:
and said to them,
† Dormíte jam et requiéscite?
† Are you still sleeping and taking your rest?
Súfficit, venit hora:
Enough! The hour has come;
ecce tráditur Fílius hóminis in manus peccatórum.
the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.
Súrgite, eámus;
Get up, let us be going.
ecce, qui me tradit, prope est.
See, my betrayer is at hand.
C. Et conféstim, adhuc eo loquénte,
C. Immediately, while he was still speaking,
venit Judas unus ex Duódecim,
Judas, one of the twelve, arrived;
et cum illo turba cum gládiis et lignis
and with him there was a crowd with swords and clubs,
a summis sacerdótibus et scribis et senióribus.
from the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders.
Déderat autem tráditor ejus signum eis dicens:
Now the betrayer had given them a sign, saying,
S. Quemcúmque osculátus fúero, ipse est;
S. The one I will kiss is the man;
tenéte eum et dúcite caute.
arrest him and lead him away under guard.
C. Et cum venísset,
C. So when he came,
statim accédens ad eum ait:
he went up to him at once and said,
S. Rabbi;
S. Rabbi!
C. et osculátus est eum.
C. and kissed him.
At illi manus injecérunt in eum
Then they laid hands on him
et tenuérunt eum.
and arrested him.
Unus autem quidam de circumstántibus edúcens gládium
But one of those who stood near drew his sword
percússit servum summi sacerdótis
and struck the slave of the high priest,
et amputávit illi aurículam.
cutting off his ear.
Et respóndens Jesus
Then Jesus said
ait illis:
to them,
† Tamquam ad latrónem exístis cum gládiis et lignis comprehéndere me?
† Have you come out with swords and clubs to arrest me as though I were a bandit?
Quotídie eram apud vos in templo docens,
Day after day I was with you in the temple teaching,
et non me tenuístis;
and you did not arrest me.
sed adimpleántur Scriptúræ.
But let the scriptures be fulfilled.
C. Et relinquéntes eum omnes fugérunt.
C. All of them deserted him and fled.
Et aduléscens quidam sequebátur eum
A certain young man was following him,
amíctus síndone super nudo,
wearing nothing but a linen cloth.
et tenent eum;
They caught hold of him,
at ille, rejécta síndone,
but he left the linen cloth
nudus profúgit.
and ran off naked.
Et adduxérunt Jesum ad summum sacerdótem;
They took Jesus to the high priest;
et convéniunt omnes summi sacerdótes et senióres et scribæ.
and all the chief priests, the elders, and the scribes were assembled.
Et Petrus a longe secútus est eum
Peter had followed him at a distance,
usque intro in átrium summi sacerdótis
right into the courtyard of the high priest;
et sedébat cum minístris et calefaciébat se ad ignem.
and he was sitting with the guards, warming himself at the fire.
Summi vero sacerdótes et omne concílium
Now the chief priests and the whole council
quærébant advérsus Jesum testimónium,
were looking for testimony against Jesus
ut eum morte affícerent,
to put him to death;
nec inveniébant.
but they found none.
Multi enim testimónium falsum dicébant advérsus eum,
For many gave false testimony against him,
et conveniéntia testimónia non erant.
and their testimony did not agree.
Et quidam surgéntes
Some stood up
falsum testimónium ferébant advérsus eum dicéntes:
and gave false testimony against him, saying,
S. Nos audívimus eum dicéntem:
S. We heard him say,
Ego dissólvam templum hoc manu factum
‘I will destroy this temple that is made with hands,
et intra tríduum áliud non manu factum ædificábo.
and in three days I will build another, not made with hands.’
C. Et ne ita quidem convéniens erat testimónium illórum.
C. But even on this point their testimony did not agree.
Et exsúrgens summus sacérdos in médium
Then the high priest stood up before them
interrogávit Jesum dicens:
and asked Jesus,
S. Non respóndes quidquam
S. Have you no answer?
ad ea, quæ isti testántur advérsum te?
What is it that they testify against you?
C. Ille autem tacébat
C. But he was silent
et nihil respóndit.
and did not answer.
Rursum summus sacérdos interrogábat eum
Again, the high priest questioned him,
et dicit ei:
and he said to him,
S. Tu es Christus fílius Benedícti?
† “Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed One?”
C. Jesus autem dixit:
C. Jesus said,
† Ego sum,
† I am;
et vidébitis Fílium hóminis a dextris sedéntem Virtútis
and ‘you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of the Power,’
et veniéntem cum núbibus cæli.
and ‘coming with the clouds of heaven.’
C. Summus autem sacérdos scindens vestiménta sua ait:
C. Then the high priest tore his clothes and said,
S. Quid adhuc necessárii sunt nobis testes?
S. Why do we still need witnesses?
Audístis blasphémiam.
You have heard his blasphemy!
Quid vobis vidétur?
What is your decision?
C. Qui omnes condemnavérunt eum
C. All of them condemned him
esse reum mortis.
as deserving death.
Et cœpérunt quidam conspúere eum
Some began to spit on him,
et veláre fáciem ejus et cólaphis eum cǽdere
to blindfold him, and to strike him,
et dícere ei:
saying to him,
S. Prophetíza;
S. Prophesy!
C. et minístri álapis eum cædébant.
C. The guards also took him over and beat him.
Et cum esset Petrus in átrio deórsum,
While Peter was below in the courtyard,
venit una ex ancíllis summi sacerdótis
one of the servant-girls of the high priest came by.
et, cum vidísset Petrum calefaciéntem se,
When she saw Peter warming himself,
aspíciens illum ait:
she stared at him and said,
S. Et tu cum hoc Nazaréno, Jesu, eras!
S. You also were with Jesus, the man from Nazareth.
C. At ille negávit dicens:
C. But he denied it, saying,
S. Neque scio neque novi quid tu dicas!
S. I do not know or understand what you are talking about.
C. Et éxiit foras ante átrium,
C. And he went out into the forecourt.
et gallus cantávit.
Then the cock crowed.
Et ancílla, cum vidísset illum,
And the servant-girl,
rursus cœpit dícere circumstántibus:
on seeing him, began again to say to the bystanders,
S. Hic ex illis est!
S. This man is one of them.
C. At ille íterum negábat.
C. But again he denied it.
Et post pusíllum
Then after a little
rursus, qui astabant, dicébant Petro:
while the bystanders again said to Peter,
S. Vere ex illis es,
S. Certainly you are one of them;
nam et Galilǽus es.
for you are a Galilean.
C. Ille autem cœpit anathematizáre et juráre:
C. But he began to curse, and he swore an oath,
S. Néscio hóminem istum,
S. I do not know this man
quem dícitis!
you are talking about.
C. Et statim íterum gallus cantávit;
C. At that moment the cock crowed
et recordátus est Petrus verbi, sicut díxerat ei Jesus:
Then Peter remembered that Jesus had said to him,
Priúsquam gallus cantet bis,
‘Before the cock crows twice,
ter me negábis.
you will deny me three times.’
Et cœpit flere.
And he broke down and wept.
