Antiphona
(Ps. 9) Ut quid, Domine, recessísti longe,
(Ps. 9) Why, O Lord, hast thou retired afar off?
déspicis in opportunitátibus, in tribulatióne?
why dost thou slight us in our wants, in the time of trouble?
2. Dum supérbit ímpius, incénditur pauper:
2. Whilst the wicked man is proud, the poor is set on fire:
comprehendúntur in consíliis quibus cógitant.
they are caught in the counsels which they devise.
3. Quóniam laudátur peccátor in desidériis ánimæ suæ:
3. For the sinner is praised in the desires of his soul:
et iníquus benedícitur.
and the unjust man is blessed.
4. Exacerbávit Dóminum peccátor,
4. The sinner hath provoked the Lord,
secúndum multitúdinem iræ suæ non quæret.
according to the multitude of his wrath he will not seek him.
5. Non est Deus in conspéctu ejus:
5. God is not before his eyes: his ways are filthy at all times.
inquinátæ sunt viæ illíus in omni témpore.
his ways are filthy at all times.
6. Auferúntur judícia tua a fácie ejus:
6. Thy judgments are removed from his sight:
ómnium inimicórum suórum dominábitur.
he shall rule over all his enemies.
7. Dixit enim in corde suo:
7. For he hath said in his heart:
Non movébor a generatióne in generatiónem sine malo.
I shall not be moved from generation to generation, and shall be without evil.
8. Glória Patri, et Fílio,
8. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son,
et Spirítui Sancto.
and to the Holy Spirit,
9. Sicut erat in princípio, et nunc, et semper,
9. As it was in the beginning,
et in sǽcula sæculórum. Amen.
is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
10. Cujus maledictióne os plenum est, et amaritúdine, et dolo:
10. His mouth is full of cursing, and of bitterness, and of deceit:
sub lingua ejus labor et dolor.
under his tongue are labour and sorrow.
11. Sedet in insídiis cum divítibus in occúltis:
11. He sitteth in ambush with the rich, in private places,
ut interfíciat innocéntem.
that he may kill the innocent.
12. Oculi ejus in páuperem respíciunt:
12. His eyes are upon the poor man:
insidiátur in abscóndito, quasi leo in spelúnca sua.
he lieth in wait, in secret, like a lion in his den.
13. Insidiátur ut rápiat páuperem:
13. He lieth in ambush, that he may catch the poor man:
rápere páuperem, dum áttrahit eum.
so catch the poor, whilst he draweth him to him.
14. In láqueo suo humiliábit eum:
14. In his net he will bring him down,
inclinábit se, et cadet, cum dominátus fúerit páuperum.
he will crouch and fall, when he shall have power over the poor.
15. Dixit enim in corde suo: Oblítus est Deus,
15. For he hath said in his heart: God hath forgotten,
avértit fáciem suam ne vídeat in finem.
he hath turned away his face, not to see to the end.
16. Glória Patri, et Fílio,
16. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son,
et Spirítui Sancto.
and to the Holy Spirit,
17. Sicut erat in princípio, et nunc, et semper,
17. As it was in the beginning,
et in sǽcula sæculórum. Amen.

18. Exsúrge, Dómine Deus, exaltétur manus tua:
18. Arise, O Lord God, let thy hand be exalted:
ne obliviscáris páuperum.
forget not the poor.
19. Propter quid irritávit ímpius Deum?
19. Wherefore hath the wicked provoked God?
dixit enim in corde suo: Non requíret.
for he hath said in his heart: He will not require it.
20. Vides quóniam tu labórem et dolórem consíderas:
20. Thou seest it, for thou considerest labour and sorrow:
ut tradas eos in manus tuas.
that thou mayst deliver them into thy hands.
21. Tibi derelíctus est pauper:
21. To thee is the poor man left:
órphano tu eris adjútor.
thou wilt be a helper to the orphan.
22. Cóntere bráchium peccatóris et malígni:
22. Break thou the arm of the sinner and of the malignant:
quærétur peccátum illíus, et non inveniétur.
his sin shall be sought, and shall not be found.
23. Dóminus regnábit in ætérnum, et in sǽculum sǽculi:
23. The Lord shall reign to eternity, yea, for ever and ever:
períbitis, Gentes, de terra illíus.
ye Gentiles shall perish from his land.
24. Desidérium páuperum exaudívit Dóminus:
24. The Lord hath heard the desire of the poor:
præparatiónem cordis eórum audívit auris tua.
thy ear hath heard the preparation of their heart.
25. Judicáre pupíllo et húmili,
25. To judge for the fatherless and for the humble,
ut non appónat ultra magnificáre se homo super terram.
that man may no more presume to magnify himself upon earth.
