Psalmus
(Ps. 122) Ad te levávi óculos meos,
(Ps. 122) To you I lift up my eyes,
qui hábitas in cælis.
to you enthroned in the heavens.
2. Ecce sicut óculi servórum,
2. As the eyes of servants look to the hand of their masters,
in mánibus dominórum suórum.
and the eyes of a maid to the hand of her mistress,
3. Sicut óculi ancíllæ in mánibus dóminæ suæ:
3. So our eyes look to the Lord our God,
ita óculi nostri ad Dóminum, Deum nostrum, donec misereátur nostri.
until he show us his mercy.
4. Miserére nostri, Dómine, miserére nostri:
4. Have mercy upon us, O Lord, have mercy,
quia multum repléti sumus despectióne:
for we have had more than enough of contempt,
5. Quia multum repléta est ánima nostra:
5. Too much of the scorn of the indolent rich,
oppróbrium abundántibus, et despéctio supérbis.
and of the derision of the proud.
6. Réquiem ætérnam
6. Eternal rest
dona eis Dómine.
grant unto them, O Lord,
7. Et lux perpétua
7. and let perpetual light
lúceat eis.
shine upon them.
8. (Ps. 123) Nisi quia Dóminus erat in nobis, dicat nunc Israël:
8. (Pps. 123) If the Lord had not been on our side,
nisi quia Dóminus erat in nobis,
let Israel now say;
9. Cum exsúrgerent hómines in nos,
9. If the Lord had not been on our side,
forte vivos deglutíssent nos:
when enemies rose up against us;
10. Cum irascerétur furor eórum in nos,
10. Then would they have swallowed us up alive
fórsitan aqua absorbuísset nos.
in their fierce anger toward us;
11. Torréntem pertransívit ánima nostra:
11. Then would the waters have overwhelmed us
fórsitan pertransísset ánima nostra aquam intolerábilem.
and the torrent gone over us;
12. Benedíctus Dóminus
12. Then would the raging waters
qui non dedit nos, in captiónem déntibus eórum.
have gone right over us.
13. Anima nostra sicut passer erépta est
13. Blessed be the Lord!
de láqueo venántium.
he has not given us over to be a prey for their teeth.
14. Láqueus contrítus est,
14. We have escaped like a bird from the snare of the fowler;
et nos liberáti sumus.
the snare is broken, and we have escaped.
15. Adjutórium nostrum in nómine Dómini,
15. Our help is in the Name of the Lord,
qui fecit cælum et terram.
the maker of heaven and earth.
16. Réquiem ætérnam
16. Eternal rest
dona eis Dómine.
grant unto them, O Lord,
17. Et lux perpétua
17. and let perpetual light
lúceat eis.
shine upon them.
18. (Ps. 124) Qui confídunt in Dómino, sicut mons Sion:
18. (Ps. 124) Those who trust in the Lord are like Mount Zion,
non commovébitur in ætérnum, qui hábitat in Jerúsalem.
which cannot be moved, but stands fast for ever.
19. Montes in circúitu ejus:
19. The hills stand about Jerusalem;
et Dóminus in circúitu pópuli sui,
so does the Lord stand round about his people, from this time forth for evermore.
ex hoc nunc et usque in sǽculum.
20. The scepter of the wicked shall not hold sway over the land allotted to the just,
20. Quia non relínquet Dóminus virgam peccatórum super sortem justórum:
so that the just shall not put their hands to evil.
ut non exténdant justi ad iniquitátem manus suas.
21. Show your goodness, O Lord, to those who are good
21. Bénefac, Dómine, bonis,
and to those who are true of heart.
et rectis corde.
22. As for those who turn aside to crooked ways,
22. Declinántes autem in obligatiónes addúcet Dóminus cum operántibus iniquitátem:
the Lord will lead them away with the evildoers;
pax super Israël.
but peace be upon Israel.
23. Réquiem ætérnam
23. Eternal rest
dona eis Dómine.
grant unto them, O Lord,
24. Et lux perpétua
24. and let perpetual light
lúceat eis.
shine upon them.
